AUSTRALIA BATTING SUMMARY
POWERPLAY – NOT THE USUAL START
Finch and Short were the openers and Bhuvneshwar Kumar had the new ball. The first over were very tight and Short was able to score just a single run. Jasprit Bumrah bowled the 2nd over. He was also accurate and the Aussies were able to score 4 runs in his over. At the 4th over Finch gave a catch to Kohli off Bumrah and Kohli drops it at the short cover. Bumrah lost the momentum and he went for 12 runs in that over.
Khaleel Ahmed bowled the 5th over and the first ball he took D Arcy Short for 7 runs. Kuldeep took the catch at mid – on. Chris Lynn came and joined with his captain. Lynn has a good record at Gabba. He averages 42 with 1 century and 5 fifties. Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled the last over of the powerplay and went for 7 runs.
The team score was 38/1 at the end of the powerplay overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was economical with just 15 runs were given for his 3 overs.
MIDDLE OVERS – RISE OF AUSSIES
Khaleel Ahmed bowled the 8th over and Lynn smashed 3 sixes and 21 runs were scored in that over. Kuldeep Yadav bowled the 9th over and removed the Aussie captain Finch. Kuldeep bowled the googly and it took the outside edge when Finch tired to wild slog at the ball. Khaleel Ahmed took the catch at backward point. Glenn Maxwell came and joined with Lynn. Krunal Pandya bowled the 10th over and Lynn smashed him for a six of his 4th ball. At the end of 10 overs Australia was 75/2.
Kuldeep Yadav bowled the 11th over and the first ball he took Lynn caught and bowled. Clearly it is understood that Chris Lynn struggling against spinners still continues. In IPL he used to smash fast bowlers but all his wickets were taken by spinners and that struggle continues here also. Marcus Stonis came to the crease. Kohli was little poor in the field and he overthrow the ball that fetched 3 runs for Aussies. Khaleel Ahmed was more expensive and he again went for 14 runs in the 13th over.
Krunal Pandya bowled his 3rd over. Maxwell smashed hat trick sixes in that over. They also bring up their 50 run partnership. That over fetched 23 runs and clearly Krunal Pandya doesn’t have liked that. Kuldeep Yadav bowled his last over and he was economical. He was mixing the speed and at one stage he even bowled at 106 KPH to Maxwell. He finished his quota and his figures were 4 – 0 – 24 – 2. In a fast bowlers pitch, clearly Kuldeep was remarkable. Kuldeep Yadav has more wickets after 15 T20I. He had picked 31 wickets and remains at top of the list.
After 15 overs, the score was 135/3. Maxwell was not out on 38 runs and Stonis was at the crease with 21 runs.
DEATH OVERS – RAIN ALSO HAD ITS PLAY
Krunal Pandya bowled his last over and the 16th over of the innings. Maxwell started smashing him again. He hit 2 sixes and he also slogged the last ball for a six, but the ball hits the spider-cam and fell down. It was announced as dead ball. Otherwise it would have been another six. Krunal Pandya finally ended his nightmare spell. He went for 55 runs in his 4 overs. The first 2 overs he went for mere 15 runs, but the last 2 overs, he went for 40 runs. He became 3rd Indian to be more expensive. The list for this as follows
Most runs conceded by an Indian bowler in a T20I:
64 Y Chahal v SA, Centurion, 2018
57 J Sharma v Eng, Durban, 2007
55 K PANDYA v Aus, Gabba, 2018
Bumrah bowled the 17th over and the first ball Khaleel dropped a sitter and Stonis escaped. But after that rain came and the match has been stopped due to rain. After some pouring, the rain stopped and overs were reduced to 17 overs per side. Bumrah took the wicket of Maxwell after the resumption. At the end of 17 overs the team score was 158/4. The last over went for mere 6 runs.
Maxwell was top scored with 46 runs off 24 balls. He clearly showing sings to IPL owners ahead of IPL auction 2019. Among the bowlers Khaleel and Krunal were too much expensive. Bhuvneshwar and Kuldeep were more economical. The fielding was rather poor with 2 dropped catches and 2 run out chances missed.
India was set the target of 174 runs from 17 overs.
DLS SCORE – SHORT EXPLANATION
This target fixing is due to DLS method invented by Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis. It’s a calculator that has a table filled with percentages. These percentages denote the resources used by each teams. This table has been formed when ODI has 60 overs per side.
Table 1: Extract from the table of resource percentages remaining
Using this table the calculator works, so here the loss of wickets also taken into consideration equaling with the overs. But for t20 matches the full overs of 20 will get 100 %. So, accordingly it will be calculated. When DLS calculating Australia lost 4 wickets so they would have lost some resources. But India never lost their wicket and so it would be considered that they will have more resource than the Aussies.
Clearly the DLS method started calculating for every over of the chasing side and the par score will be determined every time.
INDIA BATTING SUMMARY
POWERPLAY – AVERAGE START
Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were the regular openers. Jason Behrendorff has the new ball. Dhawan was aggressive from the 1st over. He scored 2 boundaries and the score reached 11 runs from 1 over. Stanlake bowled the 2nd over. Dhawan scored a boundary in his over. Till 4 overs, Dhawan was dominating and he scored 27 off 17 balls out of the team score 35 runs. Behrendorff bowled the 5th over and removed Rohit. He gone for 7 runs giving a catch to Finch at mid – on.
Surprisingly Rahul comes at number 3 ahead of Kohli. Rahul joins with Dhawan. Andrew Tye bowled the last over of the powerplay. Dhawan smashed Tye scoring 2 back to back boundaries. That over fetched 12 runs.
At the end of the powerplay India score was 53/1.
MIDDLE OVERS – DHAWAN SHOW
Adam Zampa bowled after the powerplay. Clearly the leg spinner was accurate and he beatens Rahul. But there’s no stopping Dhawan. He scored a six and 2 boundaries off Behrendorff’s bowling. Dhawan reached his 9th fifty in T20I arena. Zampa again back to trouble Rahul. And the spinner was successful by foxing Rahul for stumping. Rahul went for 13 runs.
The Indian captain Virat Kohli joins the crease. Kohli couldn’t score freely off Zampa bowling. Marcus Stonis came to bowl the 10th over. The duo couldn’t score freely and they were rotating the strike. After 10 overs India score was 93/2. Still they need 81 runs to win from 42 balls.
Zampa bowled the 11th over and the 1st ball he dropped Dhawan by his won bowling. But he successfully took the wicket of Kohli. Kohli gave a catch to Lynn standing at short third man. Kohli went for 4 runs from 8 balls. Rishabh Pant came to the crease and two left handers joined. But their stay was short as Stanlake removed Dhawan by bowling short off. Dhawan scooped and he was caught by Behrendorff at long off. The left hander went for 76 runs from 42 balls. He became the highest run getter in the calendar year. He scored 646 runs.
Zampa was the crucial bowler in this innings and he came to bowl his last over of his quota. He gave away just 5 runs at the crucial juncture. He ended his spell for 4-0-22-2. Tye came to bowl 14th over. Pant and Dinesh Karthik smashed sixes and boundaries each and scored 25 runs. Tye tried his knuckle ball but it didn’t work out. India needed 35 runs off 18 balls. Everybody was expecting DK to pull off a Nidas trophy performance.
DEATH OVER – THRILLER
Stonis bowled the 15th over. DK scored a boundary and went for 11 runs in that over. Tye bowled his 3rd over and he again went expensive. But he also removed Rishabh Pant. Pant went for 20 runs off 15 balls. Now India needed 13 runs off 6 balls. Stonis to bowl the over. Krunal Pandya and Dinesh Karthik were in the crease. Krunal got out for a slower ball wide outside off. The very next ball DK also got out at 30 runs off 13 balls. He gave a catch to long off.
SLOW POKE STONIS
Now the equation is 10 runs to win from 3 balls. Both Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav were at the crease and were new batsmen. Bhuvi scored just single and 9 to win from 1 ball. The match went out of India. Kuldeep scored a boundary of the final ball. Australia won by 4 runs by DLS method.
Clearly Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik were remarkable. Pant gave some hand. But it was a huge let down by Rohit and Kohli. Both of them went for single digits and the duo scored 11 runs from 16 balls.
The big turning point was the last over when Stonis used slower balls to dismiss both the batsmen. Clearly the slower balls was his weapon. India need to be careful with this bowling line up of Aussies. Next time Aussies can use Coulter-Nile instead of Tye to strengthen their bowling line up. For India, they just need to tight their fielding apart from that they are ok with their batting and bowling.
