Delhi Capitals – Name changed
Delhi Daredevils, part of the Indian Premier League since the opening edition in 2008, has been renamed as Delhi Capitals, the franchise announced on Tuesday (December 4). During a function for the announcement of the new name, the franchise also released a new logo.
Ahead of the 2018 edition, the GMR group entered into a 50-50 partnership with Mumbai-based steel company Jindal South West (JSW) Sports for the ownership of the team.
Having retained 14 players from the previous team, Delhi can fill up to ten slots – seven Indian positions and three overseas spots – during the auction on December 18. They have a purse of INR. 25. 50 Crore remaining, the second most available for a team in the upcoming auction. They have young guns like Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, Kagiso Rabada and Sandeep Lamichhane. Along with them, they also have experienced Colin Munro, Chris Morris, Trent Boult and not to mention the attacking opener Shikhar Dhawan.
While Ricky Ponting will continue as the head coach, Mohammad Kaif and Praveen Amre have joined the franchise’s coaching staff. Kaif was appointed as assistant coach for the team. Shreyas Iyer will continue to lead the team.
They have released the likes of Gautam Gambhir, Jason Roy, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Shami. Delhi team have traded Shikhar Dhawan from Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the IPL 2019. Delhi Daredevils is the only existing team in the IPL seasons to not go to the finals atleast once. They reached till play offs only. They lastly reached play off was in the year 2012. After 2012, they failed to reach play offs. They have reached 3 times play offs and remained at last place in the league for 4 seasons.
