Shai Hope and Denesh Ramdin were the openers for Windies. Umesh Yadav had the new ball. From the first ball, the ball was swinging and it helped the bowlers. The first over fetched 8 runs. Khaleel Ahmed bowled the second over. He also found swing and it helped him to contain well. Umesh Yadav bowled an outswing delivery to Ramdin and he gave an edge to Karthik. Ramdin went for 2 runs and the score was 16/1 in 2.1 overs. Hetmyer came to the crease and joined with Hope with a hope of getting runs on board, but it didn’t happen. Both of them got miscommunication and went on one side and it was Hope who got run out. Hope gone for 14 runs and the score was 22/2 in 3.1 overs.
After a long gap in international matches Pollard came to the team. He came at number 4. It was surprising to see him bat at higher the order as they had Bravo, Powell in their line up. Pollard was playing in ODI mode and Khaleel Ahmed was teasing him by bowling gentle out swingers. While it’s happening Hetmyer gone out for a short pitch ball. Bumrah bowled a short pitch ball and Hetmyer tried to pull shot but he gone out by giving an edge to keeper. Hetmyer went for 10 runs and the score was 28/3 in 4.4 overs.
MIDDLE ORDER – NO CONTROL
Darren Bravo came and joined with Pollard. The pair was simply rotating the strike and there was even a maiden over. At one stage Pollard hit a six off Krunal Pandya. But the debutant Pandya took his revenge at his next over. He dismissed Pollard and he registered his first international wicket. The big hitter gave a catch at long off. He went for 14 runs off 26 balls. In the next over, Bravo also got out in the same manner as of Pollard. The chinaman bowler Kuldeep removed him and Dhawan caught it well.
Windies were in trouble as the score was 49/5 in 10.1 overs. At the half way mark, the there were two new batsmen in the crease and the Indian spinners were enjoying with googly. Soon it was Powell’s turn to get dismissed and it was the chinaman bowler again. Powell gave a catch to the wicket keeper and went for mere 4 runs.
The score was 56/6 in 12.3 overs. It looked like, they never able to cross 100 run mark.
LOWER ORDER – SOME HITTING
Fabian Allen joined with the captain in the crease. The big hitting Brathwaite also got out for lbw bowled by Kuldeep Yadav. Now Keemo Paul and Allen were in the middle and they were batting good compared to the top order. The partnership was slowly raising and gave a hope for them to cross 100 run mark. The 8th wicket partnership and the 9th wicket partnership yielded them good runs and the team crossed 100 runs. Khaleel removed Allen for 27 runs. The last ball from Bumrah went for a boundary and the team score reached 109 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 20th over.
Kuldeep Yadav was brilliant in the bowling department. He took 3/13 runs in his 4 overs. Other bowlers also picked 1 wickets each.
WI BATTING STARS – Fabian Allen and Keemo Paul were responsible for this respectable score. They changed their batting order and it was the main reason for this letdown. Pollard should have batted lower the order.
INDIA BATTING SUMMARY
OPENING – NOT THIS TIME
Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were the openers. The express fast Oshane Thomas had the ball. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma needed just 17 runs to become highest runs getter for India in T20I. That too his favorite ground Eden Garden. But Thomas had other ideas. He was bowling at 146 kph and he removed Rohit for an inside edge got by wicket keeper. The umpire had no ideas, but the replays suggest that there was a slight inside edge. The first wicket for Thomas in his T20 debut. In his second over, he removed Dhawan for the third time as many times. Dhawan missed the inswinger and he got clean bowled. The score was 16/2 in 2.5 overs.
Rahul and Pant were the two new batsmen in the crease. Rahul was playing in ODI style. The Windies captain Brathwaite himself came into the action. Soon, he removed Pant for 1 run. The score was 35/3 in 5.4 overs. It was similar to the Windies batting during the powerplay.
For the first time in this tour, that the Windies bowlers looked threatening. That was a promising start by Thomas. He was nearly touching 149.6 kph and he averages almost 147 kph. Brathwaite was also threatened Indian batsmen and it looked good in Windies point of view.
MIDDLE ORDER – RETURN OF THE KNIGHT
Now Manish Pandey and KL Rahul were in the crease. Rahul gave a catch at long off and Bravo caught it brilliantly. The Windies captain made a breakthrough. Rahul went for 16 runs off 22 balls. Now the Knight riders captain Dinesh Karthik came to his team’s home ground. Both were taking singles and rotating the strike. At one stage, Thomas bowled a short ball to Karthik and it flew to the six at back off. Thomas bowled his four overs and he bowled 17 dot balls which is impressive for a debutant fast bowler. Brathwaite was also impressive in bowling.
Pollard got introduced and Karthik made use of it. He went for 12 runs in his 1st over. Now it’s time for the spinners to show the action. Pierre got introduced in the later stage, but his presence didn’t affect in Indian batsmen. They were calmly rotating the strikes. After some while Pierre removed Pandey for 19 runs and the score was 83/5 in 15 overs.
LOWER ORDER – A DAY FOR DEBUTANT
Now Krunal Pandya joins with Karthik. The left hand batsman notched up boundaries and soon hit the winning runs. Dinesh Karthik played down the anchor innings and soaked up the pressure in the batting. Throughout the innings the Windies pacers were breathing fire and mostly the credit should be given to Oshane Thomas for his fiery fast express bowling and took the wicket of both the openers. He was well supported by the captain Brathwaite himself taking 2 wickets of Pant and Rahul. But the spinners didn’t do much as expected and also there was not enough runs on the board to defend. If they had scored 130+ it could be a big tricky for Indian batsmen considering the situation they were in yesterday night.
Krunal Pandya was unbeaten on 21 runs from 9 balls and Dinesh Karthik was not out on 31 runs off 34 balls. India won the match with 5 wickets in hand in 17.5 overs. Moreover, it was Rohit Sharma’s 9th winning match out of 10 matches and he became number one in winning more match within 10 matches overall.
INDIA BATTING STARS – Dinesh Karthik and Krunal pandya were the stars for Indian team.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH – KULDEEP YADAV
