In this article we deal about the review and highlights of 5th ODI between India and West Indies.The fifth ODI match between India vs West indies(WINDIES) was held on Thiruvananthapuram on November 1, 2018.

TOSS      :  WINDIES WON THE TOSS AND CHOSE TO BAT

RESULT : INDIA WON BY 9 WICKETS

It was the overcast sky and conditions were damp in the pitch. India entering this match with the series leading 2 – 1 and Windies need to win this match to draw the series.

Jason Holder won the toss and chose to bat. The decision is wrong as batting first could be difficult as the bowlers may find swing as was an overcast sky. Also the dew was expected in the later stages which could be difficult for the Windies bowlers to grip the ball.

The team news for both the teams were as follows

INDIA – ROHIT SHARMA, SHIKHAR DHAWAN, VIRAT KOHLI (C), AMBATI RAYUDU, MS DHONI (WK), KEDAR JADHAV, RAVINDRA JADEJA, BHUVNESHWAR KUMAR, JASPRIT BUMRAH, KHALEEL AHMED, KULDEEP YADAV.

 WINDIES – KIERAN POWELL, ROVMAN POWELL, SHAI HOPE (WK), SHIMRON HETMYER, MARLON SAMUELS , JASON HOLDER (C), FABIAN ALLEN, DEVENDRA BISHOO, KEMAR ROACH,KEEMO PAUL, OSHANE THOMAS.

The Indian team fielded the same team. Windies team has few changes. Opener Hemraj and Ashley Nurse both got removed. Bishoo and Oshane Thomas came in.

WINDIES BATTING SUMMARY

OPENING – NOT THE IDEAL START

For the first time in the series Windies team openers were changed. The openers were Kieran Powell and Rovman Powell. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah shared the new balls. The first over itself Bhuvi took the wicket of Kieran Powell. Powell went for a duck, which is an upside down comparing to his fifty in the first game of the series. The wicket keeper batsman Shai Hope came to the crease. His stay in the crease wasn’t too long and got bowled by Yorker specialist Bumrah in the second over of the match. The team score reads 2/2 in 1.4 overs. This was not the ideal start for the Windies team considering they need to win the match.

The Seasoned batsman Marlon Samuels came to the crease. He hasn’t has a wonderful series with the bat so far in the series. Rovman Powell and Samuels were rotating and played to save their wickets. The balls were swinging more. The spin got introduced and Jadeja took the wicket of Samuels, he gave a catch to Kohli and left arm bowler was overjoyed. The team score reads 36/3 in 11.5 overs. Shimron Hetmyer came to the crease.

MIDDLE ORDER – FALLING WICKETS

Hetmyer also got out to Jadeja and was adjudged lbw. He got out for mere 9 runs. The Windies captain Jason Holder joined with Powell. Khaleel Ahmed removed Powell. Powell gave a catch to long off to Dhawan and he went for 16 runs. The team score reads 57/5 in 17 overs. The CPL find Fabian Allen tried to rescue the team but he failed miserably yet again. Allen went for 4 runs dismissed by Bumrah.

At the end of 21 overs, Windies were 66/6 and was in big trouble. The Indian bowlers especially Khaleel found more swing and the spinners were also enjoying as the ball spun more.

LOWER ORDER – CENTURY MARK

Keemo Paul joined with the captain. Holder started taking strike and the score was moving in a slow phase. In the 26th over, Khaleel removed Holder. The captain went for 25 runs which is the highest in the team. The score card reads 87/7 in 25.2 overs. Now Devandra Bishoo joins with Paul. Kuldeep dismissed Paul. Kemar Roach came and joined with Bishoo. The team score somehow reached 100 runs mark. But Jadeja removed Roach and the last man Thomas. Windies all out for 104 runs. Bishoo remained not out on 8 runs.

Ravindra Jadeja took 4 wickets and others also took wickets. With Bumrah and Khaleel took 2 wickets each.

WI BATTING STARS – They were no one to save the team.

INDIA BATTING SUMMARY

OPENING – T20 MODE

Indian openers Rohit and Dhawan came in the middle and Roach had the new ball. The start was slow and The speedgun Thomas bowled the second over. Shikar Dhawan got out bowled by Thomas. The dismissal of Dhawan was like an action replay of first ODI. In the same way, he got out. The left hander went for cheap 6 runs and thus his poor form in the series continued. Virat Kohli joined with hitman and the duo were hitting in t20 mode. On the other hand, Rohit completed 200 sixes and became second Indian after Dhoni. He also reached 200 sixes in fewer innings and became number one in the chart.

Rohit reached his 38th half century and went on to slaughter Windies bowlers. The team score reached the target in the 15th over. Moreover the overall match itself lasted only 46.4 overs. It was the fewest overs India had played so far. India won the match by nine wickets with 211 balls to spare. This match became second in list for India in terms of balls. India won 8th time consecutively against WI in a bilateral series.

Virat Kohli became third player in history to score 453 runs in a bilateral series. He is the highest among India overall.  Thus India won the match and the series by 3 – 1. It is the sixth consecutive trophy for Virat Kohli in home series and he really enjoyed it.

WI bowlers couldn’t find any luck and was helpless against the Indian batsmen.

The player of the series is Virat Kohli’s 7th award and he equaled with Sourav Ganguly in the list.
