Shikhar Dhawan had been ruled out of ICC World Cup 2019 due to Thumb fracture.
Dhawan had sustained the injury on Sunday from a rising Pat Cummins bouncer but went on to score a match-winning 117 against Australia at The Oval in London. He had gone for a scan on Monday and the report reveals he has a fracture.
Dhawan has been reported to take rest for three weeks, and this includes all league matches.
Shikhar Dhawan is a key player for India in ICC tournaments where he has 6 hundreds. He stands at number 3 after Sachin and Ganguly in century lists in ICC tournaments. In the 2015 World Cup, Dhawan had scored 2 hundreds. Totally the opener has 3 centuries to his name.
This will be a big blow to the Indian batting unit. As of now who will be replacing him as an opener will be a big task.
The Indian selectors had named a list of reserved players before the World Cup, includes Ambati Rayudu, Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Ishant Sharma and Navdeep Saini. It is not sure if the selectors will pick a replacement from among these players since none of players on this list are openers. The most likely option is to push KL Rahul to the top of the order along with opener Rohit Sharma, and a middle-order batsman to slot in. In the squad, Dinesh Karthik and Vijay Shankar are the favors who can fill up the middle-order spot.
There are no official news from BCCI and the Indian selectors on the issue and the replacement option.
