AIBA Women`s World Boxing Championships 2018 take place in New Delhi, India. The event starts from November 15-24, 2018. India is hosting the tournament for the second time after 2006. The hosts also topped the table with eight medals (4 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze) in 2006.
Mary Kom leads the Indian contingent at the opening ceremony. The spectators will be expecting a historic gold from the London Olympics bronze medallist Mary Kom.
Mary Kom is the five-time World Amatuer Boxing champion. She is also the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships. The 35 year old will be competing in the 48-Kg category. Kom`s main opponents are Uzbekistan’s Julasal Sultonalieva and North Korean Kim Hyang Mi. If Kom surpassed the hurdles and wins the gold medal for India, then it will be her historic sixth win in this competition.
Apart from Mary Kom, there are nine more Indian women boxers were competing in the competition. The five-time Asian gold winner Sarita Devi participating in the lightweight category (60 kg). However Sarita will have to face the defending world champion, China`s Yang Wenlu and Russia`s Anastasiia Beliakova, the Rio Olympics bronze medal winner.
